Projects
Bug Häus
The Bug Häus aims to create a research centre to understand and harness the potential of insects as natural pest control and key components of the local ecosystem. It consists of a series of entomology labs, a seed bank, non-profit organization offices, a greenhouse and bird-watching station, and a lecture space. The Bug Häus sees Plymouth’s privileged location and local ecosystem as an opportunity to become a leading insect-friendly city in the UK. Furthermore, located on a site currently occupied by a car park, this project appropriates part of it to celebrate it as a key part of Plymouth's built heritage, whilst also highlighting the victory that this would represent on the struggle against climate change.
Mayflower Community Centre
The Mayflower Community Centre was conceived as the unifying space within a masterplan that aimed to bridge the gap between students and Plymouth's local community. Site analysis revealed a cultural diversity and vibrancy that remained invisible within the city centre. Thus, the project aimed to create a civic space that made a mark on its citizens whilst equally allowing its citizens to make a mark on it. This was achieved by placing a series of moving walls to adapt the spaces to its user's needs, but more notably, by designing a cladding system meant to be replaced by cladding created in the upcycling workshop within the building.
Laira Market
The Laira Market was conceived as the unifying program within a food-production masterplan. The building aimed to explore the properties of translucent concrete, in this way revealing the structure within and allowing the space to change from a day-time market to a night-time performance space.
